What is Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)?

Aging signs around the eyes are quite easily noticeable. Eyelid lift cosmetic surgery (blepharoplasty) can remove sagging skin and excess fatty pockets around the eyelids.

This surgery can help the patient accomplish a rested, more youthful eye appearance.

Apart from the cosmetic benefits, eyelid lift surgery can also help correct partial vision obstruction in the upper eyelids as well as offer other functional advantages.

Kind board certified plastic surgeon Roger Tsai, MD provides eyelid surgery to patients in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA , and other cities and suburbs in region of the southwest.

Purpose

Blepharoplasty cosmetic surgery provides specific aesthetic and functional benefits. An upper or lower eyelid procedure can treat:

  • Loose or excess skin in the upper eyelids can lead to a hooded appearance and distort the contours of the eye. It can even cause partial vision obstruction.
  • Fatty tissue pockets can lead to puffy lower lids, heaviness around the eyes, and under eye bags.
  • Drooping lower lids.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

The surgeon can recommend an upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both to the patient upon understanding their unique anatomical and aesthetic requirements. Some patients may require additional procedures such as brow lift as well.

After the anesthesia, the surgeon commences the surgery by making incisions in discreet areas to ensure that any future scarring remains hidden.

In the case of upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the surgeon will place the incision in the upper lid crease following the natural contour of the eye. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty involves incision placement along the lower lash line.

The surgeon will excise fat tissue and excess skin from the eye region, and tighten the underlying muscles through these incisions. In general, blepharoplasty is performed using general anesthesia. The time taken for the surgery is under two hours, and it is an outpatient procedure.

Upper vs. Lower Eyelid Surgery

An upper eyelid lift surgery can give the eyes a more rested and youthful appearance. Some patient may experience ptosis (drooping of the upper lids) in addition to loose eyelid skin causing the eyes to appear partially shut even when the patient is awake.

The surgeon will assess the eyes to understand whether the patient has underlying ptosis. An upper eyelid surgery along with correction of this condition can give the eyes a more rested appearance.

In lower eyelid blepharoplasty, the surgeon places an incision on the skin or within the eyelid to eliminate excess skin. The objective is to remove the puffy under eye bags. The incisions are made right beneath the eyelid margin to ensure any following scarring remains discreet.

Recovery

The surgeon will offer the patient comprehensive post-op care guidelines. On their part, the patient should take sufficient rest, keep the head in an upright position, use cold compresses to reduce inflammation and bruising, and apply an ointment prescribed by the surgeon to decrease irritation.

A majority of patients can resume work within one week. However, the inflammation and bruising will take longer to resolve. After around two weeks, the patient will experience more youthful and beautiful results in the eye area.
