Facelift Surgery Procedure Steps

A facelift is sought-after plastic surgery to mitigate fine lines and wrinkles on the face, tighten lax facial muscles, and provide the face with a subtle lift.

During the pre-operative consultation, the plastic surgeon will explain the various steps involved in a facelift.

When the patient understands the steps involved in the procedure, it will enable them to feel more reassured about the procedure. Prudent board certified plastic surgeon Roger Tsai, MD provides facelift to patients in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, CA , and surrounding communities across the landscape.

Anesthesia

The initial step in any significant plastic surgery such as facelift will be administering the anesthesia. The surgeon will decide whether to use general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation beforehand and evaluate the patient’s fitness to undergo general anesthesia prior to the procedure.

An anesthesiologist or a certified anesthetist nurse will administer the anesthesia and remain in attendance throughout the procedure if the patient undergoes general anesthesia. The patient will remain unconscious during the surgery and will be brought out of anesthesia after the surgery is complete.

Placement of Incisions

After the anesthesia procedure is complete, the surgeon will place the incisions. They will place the incisions as inconspicuously as possible to ensure that any future scarring remains discreet. These incisions are typically hidden within the hairline. However, the extent of the incisions can differ depending on the facelift technique employed.

The surgeon may use natural facial creases to place minor incisions as these areas heal well and hide the scars effectively.

In case of a traditional facelift, the incision will start behind the hairline on one side of the head, just above the temple. The incision will then follow the hairline down to the ear and continue into the lower scalp beneath the hair.

Muscle and Skin Tightening

The surgeon will lift the skin of the face via the incisions to excise or redistribute excess fats, tighten sagging muscles, and trim excess facial skin.

After enhancing the facial contours, the surgeon will re-drape the skin tautly and smoothly using sutures and staples. They will then wrap the incision site in a bandage to support healing.

Multiple Procedures with Facelift

At times, the facelift surgery can be performed in combination with other procedures to accomplish more complete outcomes. The surgeon may perform facial and neck liposuction to remove excess fatty pockets in these areas and enhance the definition of the face.

In addition to a facelift plastic surgery, the patient may also undergo facial fat transfer, chin, cheek or lip implants, or lip enhancement with dermal fillers. Certain patients may also require upper face procedures such as brow lift or eyelid lift to attain more consistent and natural looking results. The steps involved in the facelift will vary slightly according to the additional surgeries involved.

Mini Facelift

This surgical procedure targets a smaller facial area. It focuses mainly on the lower cheeks, jaw, and neck. The surgeon will typically place the incisions along the hairline and behind the ear.

They will use these incisions to lift the muscles and excise undesirable fatty deposits as well as remove excess skin. Many plastic surgeons use endoscopic techniques to perform mini facelifts.
